Romans 14:13-19
Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

A big day for Qwerty..
So today, April 29th, Macintosh OS 10.4 (Tiger) is en route to our apartment!
I am so excited! (proving my geekiness) This will be the first major operating system upgrade that our 17" imac has seen. We have been running OS 10.2 (Jaguar) since we purchased the computer in 2002, and this will be a welcome speed bump to our daily computing needs.
I have spent the morning cleaning up around the apartment, in which I have been randomly placing junk around in for the last week or so. I observed the fact that I have been leaving things in the absolute worst place for NO REASON! I was carrying my guitar to our bedroom, where it belongs, hidden behind a chair, when I sat it ON TOP OF OUR SHOES... NEAR THE FRONT DOOR!!! Am I insane??? What in the great wide world of sports would prompt me to leave a 4 1/2 foot guitar on our shoes? In front of our door??? I've been doing that with everything else too. It's really dumb, and I have to stop... I think it might be my brain revolting... I've had alot on my mind lately, and have been doing well in other areas, so it might just be saying "Hey, I can only think of so many things at one time, and until you give me a break, I'm gonna stop thinking about things that will create obvious havoc in your life! Then you'll listen!!!"
Ok. Brain... I get the message!
Needless to say, I have more work to do, and I've been making backups of everything on the mac as it prepares for its brain transplant.

Sleepy Monday... Wonderful day!
Well. I have had a really nice, work-free day today.
Watched 2 movies. K-PAX & The Believer.
Both were very good in very different ways. K-Pax turned out different than I thought it would be, in that it was very realistic... no special effects or Spielbergian endings... Bridges was awesome as usual, and Kevin Spacey was all over this role. Very enjoyable, while it did leave some open ends.
The Believer kicked butt. Very good movie, and as skinhead movies go it was very well acted. Nowhere near the caliber of American History X, but still surprisingly good. It portrays a very different, and much more conflicted view of the Jewish religion than is normally put out in mainstream cinema. The main character verbally digs to the core of what many consider to be the main strengths of Judaism, and portays them in a way that shows them out to be the very things that are destroying society. In many ways, it seems that he is trying to call out to the Jewish culture to change. That he cares for the people, but is angered by the very essence of their lives. I don't know that what I just said made sense, perhaps you'd have to see it to get it.
*Note of caution: There are readers of this blog that are sensative to harsh language and nudity. There are both said items in the Believer. K-Pax doesn't have any of that. Oh yeah, and the Believer has violence too, but with it being a neo-nazi flick... I figured you'd get that one on your own.

Toast
Ok, so I just went on a toast binge.
Seriously...
I just ate seven pieces of toast. Quite unintentionally.
I was standing in the kitchen thinking, and decided to make some toast. So after I ate the first two pieces, I put in two more... then two more... then another one.
WHAT THE HECK???? AM I PREGNANT???

"Killing is wrong. And bad. There should be a new, stronger word for killing. Like badwrong, or badong. Yes, killing is badong. From this moment, I will stand for the opposite of killing: gnodab."

Amish Elevator
THE AMISH ELEVATOR
An Amish boy and his father were in a mall. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again. The boy asked, "What is this Father?" The father never having seen an elevator responded, "Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life, I don't know what it is."
While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a fat old Lady in a wheel chair moved up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small circular numbers above the walls light up sequentially.
They continued to watch until it reached the last number and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order. Finally the walls opened up again and a gorgeous 24-year-old blonde stepped out. The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son...
"Go get your mother."

Tom Waits Quote
I was reminded of a Tom Waits song today as I drove home...
"Roadkill has its seasons just like anything... there's possums in the autumn and there's farmcats in the spring."
- from "Murder in the red barn"
Just thought I'd leave you with that friendly note.

Excerpt from "Radio, radio" by Elvis Costello
Radio is a sound salvation
Radio is cleaning up the nation
They say you better listen to the voice of reason
But they don't give you any choice
'Cause they say it's treason
So you better do as you are told
You better listen to the radio
Jim's thought:
This really seems to be the "news" now, more than the radio, but I am so tired of the filtering that all of our media goes through before it reaches us. It's outrageous. I feel really bad for radio personalities and television writers who are being forced into smaller and smaller boxes, while the government is protected from more and more criticism every day. If it is of the people and for the people, shouldn't the people have opinions about it?
The "bad language" thing is out of hand too... focussing on issues like that, while allowing so many other horrible things to continue is just stupid. Reality TV should be outlawed or censored. Polite stupidity should be censored, not rude intelligence.

Something Evil
OR... cool!!!
Starflyer 59 has put up a free song on their website from their new album.
It's a tune that they played at the concert we saw them at last. It sounded "evil-er" in concert, but wow... what a great new direction they're headed in...
Good times...

New Band
So what looks, and sounds to be a very good thing has happened.
David Bazan of Pedro the Lion has formed a new band with his band mate T.W. Walsh, and Frank Lenz of Starflyer 59 called "The Headphones"...
Their debut album will be released on Suicide Squeeze records on May 10th of this fine year.
In other news...
Tiger, or as it is officially known as: OS 10.2.4 will be unleashed on the world on April 29th.
I am very excited as this promises to be an incredibly cool upgrade to the Macintosh Operating System. Sarah and I skipped Panther completely, due to monetary constraints, but we are not quite able to fall behind two major upgrades... for security reasons, and ease of use. The student discount is quite substantial, and so while Sarah is still in school, it makes sense to get it now.
And Sarah always said she wanted a pet tiger.

iPod has changed names...
So a few weeks ago, when I got my iPod... I named it "Bucky". It has since then showed an interest in getting a more respectable name. It felt Bucky was a good name, but seemed "small" and "insignifigant". Perhaps if it were an iPod mini, or an iPod shuffle, the case would be different... But as it stands it is a 20 Gigabyte iPod, quite expensive, and impressive, and it thought that it deserved a more intimidating name...
So in light of its request, it shall now be known as:
Zoltor, lord of all music, player of all things rock!!!

RSVP
This is an RSVP that I am sending out today to my dear friend Kristen Sauber, soon to be Reed.
I am so proud of it, that I am going to write it here in its entirety. Please enjoy. I am including the pictures I drew as well... hopefully she doesn't read this.
Kristen,
I am sorry to have to write this note, but Sarah's graduation falls on the same day as your wedding. I feel so bad. I've really been looking forward to seeing you and your family again, and finally getting to meet Jerry. So, I decided that since we can't be there in person, I'd list what we would've done and said.
1. Joyful Reunion
Big hugs all around. Sarah and I both say how beautiful you look in your dress. (Which, of course, you will...) I'd shake Jerry's hand and congratulate him.
2. The Dinner
Lots of "mmm" and "oooh!" sounds from our table as we enjoy what is sure to be a delicious meal. At which, I will entertain our table with stories of our exploits with Mike Stamm and company... Finished with my story about how that one night when we were all hanging out downstairs at your house, and your dad came down in his bathrobe, and I finally made the connection that my doctor was indeed your dad... (Big laughs all around)
3. Gifts and Goodbyes
After making sure that our gift was the prettiest wrapped, and spilling punch on the competition, we bid you a tearful adieu and say goodbye in standard Tennessee fashion. (Leaning out the window of the car while shooting my shotgun in the air and declaring my undying hatred for the McCoy clan.)
So... now that you know what we would've done and said, the only thing left is to say that we are SO very happy for you, and will be praying for your joyful new life together!
Love,
Jim & Sarah

Ohio is for lovers
I'm listening to the new song by Hawthorn Heights called "Ohio is for lovers"... witty title. They need to lose whoever is screaming in the background. Anyway.
I just thought of something about our night downtown and thought I'd share it.
The Tribune Tower downtown Chicago has pieces of other buildings from around the world embedded in it. Yeah! I know! I've seen it dozens of times, and never noticed bricks from the Kremlin, roof tiles from Roman ruins... marble from the Pope's bedroom, a spire from a German castle, tiles from the forbidden city in China, tons of other monuments are stuck in the base of the tower. You can touch them, and read the inscriptions left beside each one. SO COOL! Something that everyone should check out at least once on their trips to Chicago.

Resting today...
I worked alot yesterday. From 7-noon at Bolingbrook, and 3-9:30 at Hinsdale... Oi.
But I have an even bigger day tomorrow. 5am-11:30 at Woodridge, and 2-9:30 at Hinsdale. Somebody told me yesterday that this is good training for being a District Manager. Ok. I'll start taking THAT pay now...
Today however... today is off. All day. Sleepy-lazy-drinking-hot-tea-on-the-couch-watching-Star-Trek-day.

Sarah news
I was reading through last week's posts, and realized that there was a missing bit of information. Last week, Sarah was asked by one of her professors to come to a party later that day for Maria, one of the English Department staff members, who has been cancer free for 2 years. When Sarah got there, they toasted Maria, and then they turned around and toasted Sarah! The English Department of Saint Xavier University has honored Sarah with the "Outstanding English Student of the Year" award!!! For the whole school!!! She'll have her name engraved on a plaque in one of the hallways, and will probably get a certificate of some sort. There's going to be a ceremony for the outstanding students in their respective majors. What an awesome honor!!!
Any congratulations should be send to saremil@yahoo.com.

Off to work
Well, this won't be a long post, but I'll catch you all up quickly.
Good weekend. Sarah had a rough Sunday morning, and felt sick, but she felt better that evening.
Monday was awesome!!! Fantastic weather!!! It was redunkulous!!! And putting the "dunk" in redunkulous was the fact that I played basketball yesterday. For the first time in TOOOOOO long. I hurt when I think about moving today. I knew it was going to happen, and so when Sarah suggested going downtown last night, I jumped at the chance, knowing full well that it would be the last time for a few days that I could walk normally. We had a real good time, and sat in Millenium Park... it was really nice.
Today, I got a call at 6, that someone at another Starbucks was sick, and they were wondering if I could work. I took the shift and worked 7-noon. It's going to be a long day though... seeing as I'm closing another Sbux tonight. 3-9:30 shift. Argh. I'll sleep all day tomorrow. Day off.
Anyway... That's it for now.
Until later, I leave you with these words of wisdom from one of the great minds of our time, Jerry Springer...
"Take care of yourselves... and eachother."
